James Baldwin
“𝐿𝑜𝓋𝑒 𝒽𝒶𝓈 𝓃𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝒷𝑒𝑒𝓃 𝒶 𝓅𝑜𝓅𝓊𝓁𝒶𝓇 𝓂𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉.” — James Baldwin
James Baldwin is one of our favorite American writers and activists. His work as a queer, Black writer centered on love, hope, and compassion in the civil rights era remains etched in our collective understanding of racism in America.
Baldwin asks us, through eternity’s gaze, to examine the ways we love one another. Through speeches, essays, and novels, he asked us to witness the contradictions of promise that exist in a society that cannot name what haunts it. He reminds us that love and justice cannot exist without one another. A known traveler, lover, and observist, his works remain rooted in truth and the resounding love he had for his people. As he asks us in Notes of a Native Son: who can we become in the face of injustice? And, what does this mean about the ways we love?
How can beautiful things, even what we wear, have more intention behind them? How can we be in a more cyclical dialogue between maker and consumer? These are all questions we are asking ourselves.
We have been collectively witnessing a number of genocides, sustained and fueled by western imperialism and capitalism. Inspired by Baldwin’s grounded belief in the ways we are all connected, 100% of the proceeds of this tee will go to Help Sudanese families.
